Creative Commons co-founder Lawrence Lessig describes how modern-day copyright law stifles creativity:

Creative Commons was born out of the philosophy of
"free culture" , which promotes the freedom to distribute and modify works on the internet.
Girl Talk is one mash-up artist famous for such efforts:

For me,Creative Commons means a place where knowledge is made more accessible & is shared more freely to the world than other places.#OCL4EdBhanisha Digumber

Those who side with current copyright law are making continued efforts to protect it. YouTube, one major service provider that has previously been
accused of copyright infringement , has its own videos dedicated to the matter:

To address the complexities of copyright, Creative Commons has established a multi-tiered system in which personalised copyright distinctions can be made:

The image-hosting site Flickr notes issues with Creative Commons use when it comes to the attribution of some images.
Via Foter: According to our research, more than 90% of Creative Commons photos are not attributed at all. To make matters worse, less than 10% of the photos that do credit the original work are attributed properly. This means that more than 99% of Creative Commons photos are not adequately attributed. How To Attribute Creative Commons Photos | Foter Blog

Another criticism of Creative Commons is the rigidity of the licensing agreement:
Once publicly licensed copies are made available, they will generate more licensed copies, and it will be too late to reverse course. While the author can cease to offer the work herself with the license, or can re-offer it with a more restrictive CC license (for example, to exclude derivative works where once she allowed them), she will not be able to stop the circulation of copies previously accompanied by prior terms of the license. The Media Institute - Intellectual Property Issues: Public Licenses: The Gift That Keeps On Giving
A public Creative Commons license is also non-exclusive:
The inability to offer an exclusive deal may make the work less desirable to commercial entities with which the author may now or later wish to contract. The Media Institute - Intellectual Property Issues: Public Licenses: The Gift That Keeps On Giving
Although some argue it's difficult to make money without enforcing copyright laws, it has been done recently. K-Pop artist PSY has been able to make a considerable amount of money in ads and downloads, all without enforcing his copyrights:

I don't know if Psy or his label has actually done anything explicit to say that he's "waived" his copyright on Gangnam Style, but it is clear that he's been perfectly happy to have tons of folks make their own versions, edit the video and much much more. Each one of those things only seems to drive much more attention to the original, which only helps Psy out even more.Gangnam Style Shows What Can Happen When You Don't Lean On Copyright | Techdirt
Over the past decade, Creative Commons has expanded to about 70 countries around the world:
